What is HBOT?

Hyperbaric medicine is medical therapy where the patient’s whole body is subjected to a pressure higher than the atmospheric pressure (> 1.4 ATA) while breathing 100% oxygen inside a hyperbaric chamber.

By using the hyperbaric chamber, the partial pressure of oxygen in the tissues is increased. With this therapy, the body is oxygenated in a superior way to what is achieved by simply breathing pure oxygen under normal conditions.

This means that the blood will transport more oxygen.

Applications

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be used to treat problems such as:

  • Air or gas embolism
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning and complications due to cyanide poisoning Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene)
  • Decompression sickness
  • Arterial insufficiency
  • Central retinal artery occlusion
  • Wounds difficult to heal
  • Exceptional loss of blood that cannot be resolved with transfusion Intracranial abscess
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
  • Bone and soft tissue radionecrosis
  • Applications Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be used to treat problems such as:
  • Compromised skin grafts and flaps Thermal burn
  • Sudden deafness

Benefits

By providing the body with large amounts of oxygen, functions that are lost when the amount of oxygen is low are restored. Thus, by increasing the amount of oxygen in the body, several effects are created such as:

  • Reduction of inflammation
  • Improvement of blood circulation
  • Acceleration of scarring
  • Generation of new blood vessels in areas with poor circulation
  • Remodeling of damaged bones
  • Increased elasticity of the erythrocyte to promote circulation in the small blood vessels
  • Decrease in ischemic/reperfusion injury at the cellular level in cases of: acute myocardial infarction
    Burns
